Overview
An innovative way to home-share is here (if your town permits it) and it's called an "accessory dwelling unit" (ADU). This old-but-new approach involves creating an additional, but separate, small living space. These "units" are used in many ways: a senior may live in the small dwelling, while family, friends, or renters live in the large house. The small dwelling may also be rented out for extra income, or be used as a guest house, studio, or AirBnB.
The cost of creating an accessory dwelling can be anywhere from $30,000 to convert a garage up to $400,000 to create a new building. The benefits are independence and income while still having other people nearby when wanted.
